Chapter fourteen

CHAPTER 14

Under a sky brushed with strokes of tangerine and lavender, Mina's voice threaded through the tranquility of the morning. "Eliot, would you take me to the apple orchards? I need to check on them, and well, pick some for a pie."

The request was simple, sweetened by the thought of fresh apples and Mina's pie, and so, without hesitation, I agreed. We ambled to the old Ford pickup, the one with patches of rust like autumn leaves stuck to its blue skin, and hopped in. The engine coughed to life, echoing the crispness of an early fall morning, as we set off down the dusty road leading to the orchards.

The journey was mostly silent, punctuated by the gravel's symphony under our tires and the occasional cawing of a crow overhead. Mina, with her hair catching the morning light, made for a serene companion. But the serenity was just the calm before the storm.

As we reached the outskirts of the orchard, the rows of apple trees standing in attention, Mina's tone shifted, the weight of her words hanging between us. "Eliot," she began, her gaze locked on the passing scenery, "there's something more... I love you, and I've been wanting to ask if you'd... if you'd consider being my mate." Her words were ripe with emotion, dropping like unexpected apples thudding to the ground.

The truck might have rumbled on, but my world stalled, the gravity of her confession anchoring me to my seat. Her directness was a surprise, her vulnerability a gift I hadn't anticipated. Yet, my heart beat in echo to her declaration; I harbored the same fervent emotion.

"Mina," I managed, my voice a mere whisper over the truck's growl, "I feel the same, but what about Lila and Zara? Won't they..."

She turned to me, a soft chuckle escaping her, and in that laugh, I heard the unraveling of my doubts. "They're in this, too, Eliot. We've talked about it. They feel the same."

Zara, with her usual cool distance, wanting to mate with me? It seemed as foreign as snow in July. "But Zara has always been so... reserved with me."

"That's just her fear of rejection. She's scared, like any of us. But she wants this, Eliot. We all do." Mina's hand found mine, a gentle but firm reassurance that the tapestry of our lives was indeed intertwining.

The orchard's presence around us seemed to celebrate the revelation, the apples waiting to be picked a symbol of the ripe potential of our joined futures. As we parked under the boughs heavy with fruit, I felt a new season upon us, one of shared love and intertwined destinies.

I took a deep breath, letting the crisp air fill my lungs, and as I exhaled, I knew. I wanted to take that step, to weave my life with theirs in the most intimate of dances.

When we stopped the truck at the orchard, Mina motioned for me to look in the bed of the truck. I saw that it had blankets and pillows. Mina had planned to be intimate with me.
